How to use the cloth shader?? 1 Year, 6 Months ago
Hi.

I'm wondering if anyone knows how to correctly use the cloth shader available for download on this site? The shading network is really complex and I don't fully understand it. When I apply it to a surface I don't get the same result as seen in the photo on the shader page of the site. The light doesn't seem to diffuse and scatter around in the surface. I'm using Maya 2008 and rendering with mental ray for maya. If anyone could offer and tips or if anyone know how to make a cloth shader please let me know.

best,

Sorry. Here are some renders of a work in progress. I intended to use the cloth shader to make a brown type of cloth for a chair that I modeled. But I can't get the shader to look anything close to what it looks like in the image on the shader download page.

The first render is with the cloth shader available for download on the site looks like when applied to my chair and rendered with mental ray for maya.

The second is with a simple smooth leather-type shader that I made.

If anyone has used the cloth shader successfully please let me know or knows how to make one that looks like the material for the cloth shader in the pic on the shader download page please let me know.

Best,

Hi, simply apply a cloth shader and render, to change color use a dark and light of color. See this pic

the cloth shader in download page is a velvet, to made a cotton or similiar you can use a lambert or a mia_material with reflectivity set to 0.

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply. Normally, I would a lambert for a cloth material but I was just trying to get that cloth shader to work. The cloth in your scene looks good. Did you do anything special to the material attributes other than changing the diffuse to 0?

See this,

The realism in this render is made:

20% from shader
40% from texture
40% from light

You can't create realistic picture without union of this point.

Listen, try to use simply a lambert, good texture and light and post render.

Thanks again John. I've been working on getting better at doing things in post. Here's a couple of pics of the final render for my scene. I did a daytime shot and night time shot. Still I'm not happy with the curtains. Especially the white netted curtains. They have an unusual "sheen" to them even though I only used a lambert. So I'm trying to tweak them now. I'm also having trouble with the "ctrl occlusion" shader. I wanted the occlusion shadows to look as if they were being vectored in a certain direction by the light, which is totally natural. But the ctrl occlusion shader for Maya 2008 seems a but buggy and does not render properly. Please let me know what you think.
