you must try realflow, is a good software to import triangulate mesh (exported from maya) and create an emitter using all cpu to calculate fluid dynamics. After that you can export a 24 file for second in ever file there is a _object_ in space. you must install a realflow plugin in maya to import the mesh-key_frame_-file list.

For create render you simply click a mesh and assign every shader. The game is concluted!

maya's ocean_shader is excellent for just about any types of water and can be applied to any surfaces (a big flat plane is fine) so no modeling necessary. its settings are pretty straight forward too

The maya ocean is another stuff, Maya ocean is not a fluid but only a deformable plane.
You can use realflow or new Maya nParticles is the second module built on the Maya Nucleus unified simulation _frame_work. nParticles can be used to simulate a wide range of effects including liquids, clouds, smoke, spray, dust.
